Bait Car - Pilot Program
Auto Theft

Auto theft is a problem in Vancouver. In the last 16 months 619 vehicles were stolen in your neighbourhood. It is time to stop auto theft. With the Vancouver Police Department, ICBC, the Collingwood Community Policing Office and You working together, we can reduce auto theft.
The office works to help prevent auto crime by partaking in the following programs:
- Pooch Patrol
- Bike Patrol
- Foot Patrol
- Speed Watch
- Auto Crime Prevention Notice
- Safety Audits
- Community Outreach
- Bait Car
In September of 2002, the Vancouver Police Department started the Bait Car Program in response to the high incidence of auto theft. The results have been very favourable. The Bait Car Program works by the police placing a bait car in a location, and then when the thief gets into the vehicle they trigger a system that allows the police to track the vehicle through a global positioning system. The Vancouver Police Department is dedicated to reducing auto theft in your area.
Tips to prevent your vehicle from being stolen or broken into
1) Invest in an anti-theft device. There are many types: Steering wheel lock, a car alarm and an electronic immobilizer. You may want to consider using two of these devices. The Vancouver Police Department recommends the electronic immobilizer for the best protection of your vehicle.
2) Close the windows and lock the doors. Take all your possessions with you. Do not leave anything in your car.
3) Keep an extra set of keys with you. Do not leave them in the vehicle.
4) Park in well lit areas.
5) Report any suspicious activity to the police.
6) Check the ICBC website at www.icbc.com for more information regarding prevention.
7) You are the "Eyes and Ears". You can report by: Phone: (604)-717-2935, Fax: (604)-430-4935, E-mail: crimprev@telus.net and in case of an emergency, call 911.
